Marian Institute for Innovations in Teaching-Learning and Evaluations (MIITLE)

Presently, the Higher Education in India is experiencing a paradigm shift where the focus is on student learning. The old teacher-centered, content focused approach has now shifted to learner-centric, outcome based education. This shift has necessitated a whole lot of changes both at the attitudinal as well as at the curriculum design level for students, teachers and other stakeholders alike. The role of teacher changes from the “sage on the stage” to the “guide on the side”, coaches of understanding, and not mere providers of content knowledge, skill or activity. For championing this paradigm shift, and training the stakeholders for adopting an outcome based, student-centric education, the College has established Marian Institute for Innovations in Teaching - Learning and Evaluation (MIITLE) in 2018, an Institute within the campus with the funding support from RUSA.
MIITLE is an academic center committed to transforming Higher Education in Kerala and other States. Innovations in curriculum, pedagogy and assessments are the primary foci of the institute. Through research based best practices in teaching and learning, the MIITLE offer professional development services for educators in Marian and other mentee colleges nearby.

MIITLE

The Need
For Teachers in early education, primary and at high school levels, do require some formal training in pedagogy, learning theories and educational technologies prior to their entry to teaching assignments. No such trainings are required for higher education teachers today. Similar trainings for teachers in the Higher Education Institutions (HEIs), no doubt, will tremendously enhance the quality of learning experience and the student engagements in these Institutions.
Most of the teachers in HEIs enter the career unaware of many essential knowledge and skills such the science of outcome based teaching-learning, andragogy, modern educational technologies, technology assisted engaging pedagogies, designing aligned curriculum and strategies for deeper or active learning. As a result, teaching-learning process becomes rather teacher-centric and most of the teachers in HEIs are ‘single tool’ (lecturing) teachers. This in turn makes a large number of students’ mere surface learners. The current examination systems only testing student’s memory and comprehension, thus limiting the scope for active learning, higher order thinking and reflective learning abilities are never developed.
